5 Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pains make day to day tasks a challenge to complete because they limit you’re your range of movement and cause chronic aches.

According to WebMD, the number of Americans experiencing joint pain is on the rise. Studies have revealed that the expected number of people who will be affected by joint pain in 2040 will be 78.4 million!

So what exactly is the cause of this widespread problem? The answer isn’t black and white. There are many reasons for joint pain, some more serious than others.

Joint injury

Blunt force trauma can cause significant damage to a joint. Tripping while jogging can fracture your ankle, falling on your knees can weaken the joint, etc. Such trauma weakens the various components of the joint. Injuries can lead to bone bruising, bone remodeling, and damage to the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. Moving such joints to complete even basic tasks can become very painful.

Joint inflammation

Inflammation within the joints is a sign of injury, disease, or infection. An inflamed joint often swells due to increased synovial fluid production. The inflammatory fluid enters the joint tissue, known as active synovitis. A patient will often feel pain, warmth within the joint and on the surface of the skin, and stiffness.

Joint infection

Though they’re rare, joint infections are very serious. Bacteria can travel through the human body and attack a joint. This can lead to infectious arthritis. Medical care is required to fight these kinds of infections. Delaying the treatment or leaving the problem untreated can lead to permanent joint damage.

Tumor

While tumors rarely form near the joints of the body, that doesn’t mean they can’t happen. Tumors can form near the bone or soft-tissue near the joint. Synovial chondromatosis and villonodular synovitis are two types of tumors that form in the lining of the joints.

Such tumors are often benign; however, they can be aggressive too. If you’ve developed one, it has to be surgically removed. Radiation therapy may be needed depending on the success of the surgery.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid is an important gland in the body that’s located towards the front of the neck. The optimal functioning of this gland controls your metabolism. Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid gland.

In some cases, hypothyroidism can result in joint pain. Stiffness and muscular pain can also prevail as a result. Hypothyroidism requires a treatment plan. This includes pain managing drugs and hormone replacement.
